Who enters free at the Rijksmuseum and how to claim your discount.

Several categories enter the Rijksmuseum free of charge. Read the eligibility below, then see our visitors guide and accessibility pages for how to use the free entry on site.

Who enters free

    • Under 19s — children and teens 0–18 enter free with valid ID.
    • Museumkaart holders — the Dutch museum pass grants free entry to all Rijksmuseum galleries.
    • ICOM members — show your valid ICOM card.
    • Companions of disabled visitors — one free companion ticket per eligible visitor.
    • Rijksmuseum Friends (Vrienden) — year-round free entry plus private-view events.
    • Journalists — accredited press may enter free on the day.

Reduced entry

Currently there is no general student discount for international students — the standard €22.50 applies. Check the official site during special exhibitions for temporary student promotions.

How to claim your free entry

Even when you enter free, you still need a timed-entry ticket for the slot you want. Book it on the official website (for €0 or Museumkaart flow) or at the on-site ticket desk. Bring the document that proves eligibility — ID, Museumkaart, ICOM card, or disability card.

Queues at the walk-in desk on weekends can be long. If you have a Museumkaart, reserving the slot online 24 hours ahead saves time.

Do under 18s need a ticket?
Yes — a free timed-entry ticket is required. Book it in the same order as paying adults.
Is the Iamsterdam City Card accepted?
Yes — it includes free entry. You still need to select a time slot on the official site.
Do EU students get a discount?
Generally no. Some temporary exhibitions offer a student price — check the exhibition page.
Is there a family ticket?
No single family ticket is needed — under 18s are free, so you only pay adult admissions.
Can carers enter free?
One companion of a disabled visitor enters free — see our accessibility page.
Is entry free on specific days of the year?
No. Unlike some national museums, the Rijksmuseum does not hold general free-entry days.
What if I lose my free ticket?
Bring your booking email and your eligibility document to the information desk — staff can re-issue on the spot.
